Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday family life with a weekend getaway to Blairsville, an official Appalachian Trail community in Union County, Ga.
Don’t have time to plan the trip. We get it. That’s why we put together this itinerary for you – just follow along for a fun couple of days connecting with each other and enjoying some fresh mountain air.
Getting Started: Where to Stay in Blairsville, Union County, Ga.
The first step is to determine your dates and rent a cabin. There are three property management companies that operate in the Union County, Enchanted Mountain Retreats, Majestic Mountain Getaways and Cozy Cove Cabin Rentals, but you can also use VRBO.
I booked this cabin on Lake Nottely. Unfortunately we had to postpone our trip, so I don’t have a first hand review of the cabin, however, Lori was very helpful with information and as soon as we can reschedule, we’ll book her place.
Day 1: Decompress
Take a Hike. Shake off the honey do list at home with a hike on one of the many trails in Blairsville. If you have little ones, head to Helton Creek Falls. The walk to the waterfall is a short one for little legs, and the area around the falls is a perfect sandbox to play in. If you want something a little more strenuous (but still not too difficult), try hiking Blood Mountain, which is part of the Appalachian Trail. Be sure to stop at Mountain Crossing, a fun shop that is the only covered section of the AT and a great place to see thru hikers.
Hole in the Wall. After hiking, you’ll want a hearty dinner. Hole In the Wall is the oldest diner in Union County and a local favorite. Breakfast is served all day, but you’ll be dining on the prime rib special this evening. Mmmm. Bring cash, they don’t take cards.
Day 2 – Outdoor Adventure
The Sawmill Place. Start your day with a BIG breakfast at another local favorite The Sawmill Place. You’ll need the fuel from this farm-to-table restaurant for today’s adventures.
Take a Trail Ride at A Step Above. No matter what your family make-up, A Step Above can accommodate you. They have pony rides for little ones, three different levels of trail rides and they can accommodate heavier riders and young children too.
Jim’s Smokin’ Que. We always seek out BBQ when we travel. Grab the PIG- a-NIC to take on the boat, because you’ll be spending the rest of today on beautiful Lake Nottely.
Boat on Lake Nottely. Rent a pontoon boat from Moriah Doucette at the Lake Nottely Marina and spend the afternoon exploring this 4,180-acre lake. Be sure to ask for directions to the best swimming spots. Inquire if the rope swing at mile marker three is still there, and if the water is high enough to jump off the Cliffs.
A Nice Dinner at Michaelee’s. After cleaning up from a day on the lake, enjoy a nice glass of your favorite wine and a spectacular dinner at Michaelee’s Italian Life Caffe. Owners Chef Michael and his wife Lisa travel frequently to Italy and are students of Italian cuisine, which shows in their hearty menu.
Beyond the food (which is reason enough) there are two other reasons we like Michaelee’s – BYOB so go ahead and bring that amazing wine you love, and The Cellar where you can get an after dinner espresso and dessert!
Need a less fancy option, or one that would be lake attire appropriate – see our post on Blairsville restaurants.
Day Three: A Picture Perfect Ending
View Four States at Brasstown Bald. Hike a paved trail or take a shuttle to the summit of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia for views of Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. They also have an interesting museum and a movie that takes you through all four seasons on the mountain in just a few minutes.
Sicily’s Pizza. Before heading out, enjoy lunch at Sicily’s, a favorite local Pizzeria that is one of the few places open on Sundays in Blairsville.
Walk through a Fairy Village at Sleepy Hollow. Make a quick stop at Sleepy Hollow, the studio and store of former Disney Imagineer Art Millican, Jr. His birdhouses and full-sized playhouses will entertain and delight.
