Mary Mac’s is my very very VERY favorite restaurant in all of Georgia. Yup! Seriously. It is great for kids, too. It’s real southern food, served as a meat and two sides.
Lunch with the boys at “Atlanta’s Dining Room” (declared so a few years ago by the GA House of Rep!) was delicious and fun! “Mom, you get 100 bonus points for bring us here!” declared my fussy eater. If you are looking for a meat and two sides, southern style, which works for the whole family then this is the place to be!
Don’t let the name fool you, this is no place for high tea. Matt Thompson, the Director of Operations at Mary Mac’s, explained to me the story behind the name. During and shortly after the war it was frowned upon for women to open a restaurant, so businesswomen used a more “acceptable” term – Tea Room. Just like now, the original menu at Mary Mac’s included a meat and two sides such as collards, fried okra, or sweet potato casserole. It’s full-on southern fare, here! In the 40s there were 16 tea rooms in Atlanta. Now, Mary Mac’s is the only one left. It is currently being run by John Ferrell who was hand-picked by the previous owner to keep the spirit of the original restaurant alive and well.
If you love southern food then do yourself a favor and try this place out immediately. I feel like such a heel for not coming sooner, but it instantly became my favorite place in all of Atlanta! Sincerely. Deep south cooking, friendly staff, options and an atmosphere that make it easy to come with the kids, plenty of choices at affordable prices….as I write this, I’m considering another visit. I think we might just head there tomorrow!
Disclosure: We recevied a complimentary meal at Mary Mac’s, but this is no way changed my review. I love love love it, and go regularly! #KeepingItReal
