Black Rock Mountain State Park is the highest state park with captivating views of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. You can stay in a cabin with back porches facing the 3,600+ ft views, or simply spend the day hiking several trails in the park.
Our cottage included two bedrooms/two baths. Three bedroom cottages are available. Each bedroom had two queen size beds, complete with sheets and extra blankets. Rooms were on opposite sides of the cabin, offering privacy if being shared by multiple families.
The back porch is accessible from the living area. It was a long porch with rockers and end tables. Each of the cottages I could see were much like ours, with no backyard, but with a gorgeous view of the distant mountains.
Out the front door was a fire pit, to be shared with a neighboring cottage. There were 10 cottages in a cul-de-sac arrangement, with a playground at the end of the circular drive.
The cottage was obviously a bit older, but it was still comfortable and cozy. The cottage was a great place to call “home base” as we explored the mountains. I recommend it, whether your objective is taking I the State Park itself, or touring the nearby mountain towns.
There are 11 miles of trails, at varying degrees of difficulty. My boys and I hiked the two shortest trails, Ada-Hi Falls Trail and Black Rock Lake Trail. The 2.2 – mile Tennessee Rock Trail and the 7.2-mile backcountry trail were rated difficult and strenuous, so we are saving those until the boys are older.
We hiked Ada Hi Falls just after a rainstorm and had the pleasure of watching and feeling the water come off the mountain, then we also took a leisurely stroll on the .85 trail around Black Rock Lake. Just north of the road to Black Rock Lake Trail is access to Foxfire Museum, which makes a fun stop for the whole family!
Black Rock Mountain is a gorgeous haven in the mountains, with 80-mile scenic vistas, lush forests, and wonderful hiking opportunities. We had a great time, and I hope to return again when the boys are older to complete the trail circuit here.
