Now through October 30th, you have the opportunity to catch the world premiere of the mystery-comedy Freed Spirits onstage at the Horizon Theatre. This is your perfect October date night event!
Freed Spirits is an original play written by award-winning Atlanta playwright Daryl Lisa Fazio. The story is set in Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery, and begins with a tornado that rips through the landmark cemetery, unearthing objects and spirits that have been buried for hundreds of years. A group of 4 quirky characters have to work together to unravel the mystery, and discover the truth about the cemetery’s secrets and each other.
The story comes to life through the talents of it’s extremely well-cast actors. The four principal characters in the story are portrayed by Suehyla El-Attar, Marguerite Hannah, Jonathan Horne and Bryn Striepe. This foursome truly does an amazing job at creating personalities that are quirky and sometimes strange, but so likable and many times laugh out loud funny. They are absolutely characters with many layers, as was the intent of playwright Daryl Lisa Fazio.
Freed Spirits is currently Suzi Recommended, which means it will be considered for a Suzi Bass nomination and award at the end of the judging cycle next September. This is very exciting, as the mission of the Suzi Bass Awards is to celebrate and promote Atlanta professional theatre through the evaluation and recognition of excellence.
The Horizon Theatre has done quite an impressive job in creating the set and lighting for this show. They use interesting levels, turning set pieces and creative lighting to transport you to the fascinating setting in Oakland Cemetery. Personally, I have never visited that cemetery but after watching this show, my curiosity is peaked and I’m looking forward to planning my own adventure there.
I’ve said this before, but if you have never been to the Horizon Theatre, you really need to go! It is charming and artsy, nestled in the middle of Little Five Points. As a theatre company, they are doing an incredible job of bringing contemporary and diverse material to the stage, with professional level talent in their actors and production teams. The theatre is small and intimate with only 172 seats, and seating is on a first come, first served basis (with the exception of specific seating for select donors and anyone with special needs; and the center section for subscribers.)
Freed Spirits runs about two hours, including intermission, and is considered appropriate for middle school and up audiences. It is running September 23rd through October 30th, Wed, Thurs and Fri at 8 PM, Saturday at 3 PM and 8:30 PM and Sunday at 5 PM. The Horizon Theatre is in Little Five Points/Inman Park. (1083 Austin Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30307, corner of Euclid and Austin Avenues).
