For those who don’t know, hubby and I work hard to escape the house – overnight and without the kids- once a month. Our regular ideas for date night include the city, the mountains…even a different state! This month Sandy Springs, Ga invited us to taste a bit of the romance they offer couples. We were blown away!
Sandy Springs is an ideal location that I hadn’t considered in the past. It’s still “in the city,” but without the crowds and prices (i.e. headaches) that you might run into in Buckhead or Midtown. Next time you are looking for a special occasion restaurant, dining and music, or a weekend getaway from reality then consider Sandy Springs.
Ideas for date night: Sandy Springs, Ga
Here is our itinerary for fun, including:
Dine at MAYA Steaks and Seafood
MAYA Steaks and Seafood is an ideal date night dining location. Because it is in Sandy Springs, you avoid the crowds and waiting that typically accompany a steakhouse of this prestige within the city limits. The food was mouth-watering and the ambiance was sensational.
MAYA boasts over 40 different wines available by the glass, so that is where we started. I went with a glass of Fritz Zinfandel, suggested by our waiter since I love a peppery red. (Never be shy about asking your waiter for a recommendation if you are not familiar with the wine selections available. You can tell them what you like and don’t like, and they can usually help you make a selection. I have yet to go wrong with this approach!) If you’re celebrating something special, there are even four Champagne splits available making it an affordable way to say cheers.
The menu offers a considerable selection of warm and cold appetizers. This is where you can begin to see Chef Mimmo Alboumeh’s Spanish flair take hold…from the Spanish charcuterie to the Pulpo Gallego- Spanish octopus with roasted potatoes and aoli. We opted for the waiter-recommended Grilled Oysters and were swept away by their rich flavor. Four Bluepoints are cooked with spinach and Manchego, topped with a bit of spicy kick.
It’s no surprise here that the main entrees of choice are beef and seafood. Yelpers love the Salmon and Seabass selections, but hubby and I both opted for red meat. He went with the NY Strip, and I picked the Center Cut Filet. They were offering it Oscar-style that night, and what a treat it was, perched on a bed of asparagus with Hollandaise and topped with whole-lump crab meat. It. Was. Amazing. The meat was cooked to the perfect temperature, easy to cut, and melted in my mouth. We also tried a side of creamed corn, which was better than my Grandma’s. Shh. Don’t tell her!
We finished with the Crème Brulee. Unlike your ordinary French custard, this offered a citrus twist that has spoiled me for life. Someone contact the French Embassy and tell them they’ve made a mistake all these years. This citrus derivation is divine.
More about the restaurant; it is owned by Chef and Restaurateur Mimmo Alboumeh of Red Pepper Taquería, and was just opened a year ago this month. He named the place after his daughter, and a sweet impression of her hangs over the inviting bar.
I am especially sensitive to noise levels in restaurants as of late. A few people have written, asking me to recommend restaurants with a low to moderate noise level. MAYA fits the bill. Hubby and I were able to have an intimate conversation without yelling at each other across the table.
I adored the classic but comfortable feel. White tablecloths juxtapose the refurbished-looking wood on the walls. The floors are stone, and large heavy draperies and glass-panel doors divide the spaces within the restaurant.
Dim lights, a charming interior design, delicious food and a romantic ambiance make MAYA a premium date night restaurant.
Rock Out at Steve’s Live Music
After eating at MAYA, we headed over to Steve’s Live Music, which is tucked just behind the restaurant making them the perfect pair.
Steve’s Live Music is an intimate smoke-free music venue, with a full bar and small plates should you get hungry. Personally, I think it’s Sandy Springs’ best kept secret. We will definitely be back again and again.
We sat next to a group of couples who live nearby and frequent Steve’s on a regular basis. Familiar with the music scene, the man told me he thought of Steve’s as the “Eddie’s Attic” for the north side of town. I hate to pigeon-hole this fantastic venue; on the other hand, an Eddie’s Attic comparison is probably the best compliment one could give- and deservedly.
When we visited, Almost Billy Joel performed. Led by Hugh Michael Tyner, this tribute band was outstanding! I loved how the crowd was up on their feet, dancing at their tables during the classics. Everyone was swaying to the music, raising a glass and having a ball.
The tables are first-come, but there isn’t a bad one in the house. We sat in the middle of the room, off to the side a bit, and it was perfect. The wait staff comes around, allowing you to put in your drink or food order. Servers are limited though, so be patient with them and don’t wait until your glass is empty to ask for your next drink. They hustle, but you’ll be more happy if you think ahead about your order. Also, be aware that the menu is primarily vegetarian and pescetarian fare. So if you’re craving meat, stop over at MAYA first!
Steve’s hosts performers from every genre. If you don’t feel like shelling out a few hundred dollars for Madonna at Phillips Arena, you can opt for $10 seats to the Madonna Tribute Band this weekend. Also this month, A Doors and an Allman Brothers tribute band.
A note about those bands…they are not targeting Millennials. While everyone is welcome, you’ll find the crowd here has long since graduated college. For this 40-something woman, that was a welcome party to be a part of.
Enjoy Celtic music on Mondays, Bluegrass on Tuesdays and Blues on Thursdays. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, the local and national songwriters, and musicians they showcase are a treat. Be sure to watch their website for Facebook page for upcoming concerts.
Stay at The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North
We love to make our monthly date nights an overnight escape (thank you Grandparents!) In January we stayed at The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, and loved every minute. Here are six reasons why we highly recommend you enjoy a night there, too.
Corner Suites are designed for all the comforts of home
You can certainly enjoy a date night in a standard king room at The Westin; all of the rooms are exceptionally spacious and inviting….but since my romantic getaways only occur once a month (unlike date nights before kids that happened every weekend,) I love to be pampered in a suite! You can call me spoiled…I call it mind and body rejuvenation!!
We relaxed in a lake-view living room suite. The door opened to an 850 sq foot space covered with floor-to-ceiling windows which offered terrific views and tons of natural light. The living area included a dining table, comfy sofa with chaise, chairs, entertainment system and a mini kitchen. The mini kitchen had a wet bar, fridge, wine chiller and coffee maker. If you are visiting with the family, you can take advantage of the sofa; it turns into a queen size sleeper.
Off the living area was a heavenly bathroom with a shower I could live in for days! The bedroom included a second TV, closet and king-sized bed, with more windows allowing in great light.
I loved the modern décor, warm colors and comfortable feeling of the suite. I’d say it is the ideal room for date night OR a family stay.
Romantic Getaway Package (or a free family option)
Since hubby and I were escaping for a date night, we enjoyed the Indulge In Romance Package. It included breakfast for two from the restaurant, Champagne and strawberries upon our arrival and a late check out. It was heavenly, and I highly recommend it.
If you are staying at The Westin with the kids, then take advantage of the Get A Connecting Room Free Package. When you book one room during a stay on a Thursday- Sunday, you get a connecting room free. That’s a great way to vacation with the family, but experience a bit of romance in the evening when everyone is sleeping safely in their own room.
See these and other special The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North Packages here.
Guests can enjoy the amenities of the Concourse Athletic Club
The CAC offers over 100,000 square feet of state of the art equipment, basketball court, fitness rooms, spa and more, and it is rated as one of the top 5 fitness clubs in the country. There is an outdoor pool and an indoor pool (both saline,) with whirlpools and saunas.
Didn’t pack your workout gear, but you want to take advantage of a Pilates class, indoor track or rooftop tennis courts? No problem. Westin partners with New Balance to provide athletic shoes and apparel during your stay for a small fee. Simply call the front desk and request your shoe and clothing size, and they will be conveniently delivered to your guest room. Shoes come with socks that are brand new, and apparel is provided fresh and clean. Upon departure, simply leave the items in your room.
Savor Bar & Kitchen makes dining easy
Savor Bar & Kitchen is located on the bottom floor of The Westin, and it offers terrific options for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We first visited on Friday evening around midnight, after returning from Steve’s Live Music. It was a great place to grab a sparkling water and some hummus for a “midnight snack” before heading back upstairs.
We enjoyed a late Saturday brunch at Savor, as well. In addition to the buffet, you can order from the menu…oatmeal or a smoothie…French toast or blueberry pancakes…even a sirloin with organic eggs and home fries!
Recent renovations make The Westin fresh and fun
Just over a year ago The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. In addition to the 20,000 sq feet of meeting space that was updated, each of the 372 rooms of the hotel were revitalized also.
“Spacious guestrooms, many with spectacular lakeside views, offer tranquility and rejuvenation. All guestrooms and suites have been completely transformed with new design elements and décor, and feature the world-renowned Westin Heavenly® Bed – an oasis of lush sheets, down pillows and patented pillow-top mattresses that cradle and contour the body for a fully restorative sleep. Guests can relax and enjoy Westin’s Heavenly® Bath, Heavenly® Shower, Heavenly® Robe and White Tea Aloe bath amenities,” said Martin van der Laan, general manager.
The Sandy Springs Westin is in an ideal location
The Westin in Sandy Springs is not too far from MAYA Steaks and Seafood and Steve’s Live Music, which makes it a great place to escape for the evening. It’s also located right off of 285 near Perimeter Mall, which offers central access to myriad shopping and dining options.
Hubby and I opted not to drive for date night. We parked the car at the hotel and used Uber to get about for our date. It was exceptionally convenient, and I recommend it for those who enjoy drinking during date night.
Again, we cannot recommend Sandy Springs more highly. It was an incredible weekend; I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy it soon with your love!
Disclosure: Thank you to Sandy Springs and their partners for arranging this date night weekend in order to facilitate a review. Call me Honest Abe; I cannot tell a lie. If it wasn’t fantastic, we wouldn’t write about it! #keepingitreal
